Story of Ali ibn Abi Talib

Ali’s full name is Ali Ibn Abu Talib Bin Abdul-Muttalib Bin Hashim, he came from the family of Banu Hashim which is a respectable family of Quraish. He was the prophet Muhammad’s (peace and blessing be upon him) cousin.

He was the son of Fatimah who embraced Islam in the early days and migrated to Madinah. His father Abu Talib was chief of the Banu Hashim tribe and he was the one responsible for the Kaaba.

Ali was born in Mecca on March 17, 599 AD (13th of Rajab) which was 30 years after the incident of the Elephant. He is one of the 10 sahaba who were promised Jannah. He married the daughter of the prophet Fatima, and he was the first child to embrace Islam. He was the one responsible for collecting the Holy Quran.
Biography of Ali ibn Abi Talib

When Ali was just five years old, an economic crisis occurred in Mecca, therefore the prophet asked his uncle Al-Abbas to help his other uncle Abu Talib. The prophet and Al-Abbas took care of Abi Talib’s children as the prophet took care of Ali and Al-Abbas took care of Jafar. Ali was raised with kindness which affected the rest of his life. When the Quran was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him), Ali was the first child to embrace Islam.

One time when Ali ibn Abu Talib arrived home he found the prophet and his wife Khadijah praying, he asked them what kind of prayer is that and the prophet told him about the revelation and that there is no God but Allah. Whoever, Ali told the prophet that he didn’t hear about this kind of religion and wanted to ask his father Abi Talib about it, but the prophet told him to keep that a secret for a little longer.

The next morning, Ali came to the prophet and told him that he wants to embrace Islam. In the beginning, Muslims kept their Islam a secret. When Ali told his father Abi Talib he refused to turn to Islam but he didn’t mind Ali being a Muslim.
Ali ibn Abi Talib during the migration to Madinah

When the Muslims migrated to Madinah the prophet stayed in Mecca until he got permission from Allah to migrate to Madinah. When the disbelievers heard of this they decided to kill the prophet before he get the chance to migrate. Whoever, the angel Gabriel told the prophet about what the disbelievers wanted to do and asked him not to sleep in his bed this night. When Ali ibn Abi Talib knew that he offered to sleep in the prophet’s bed instead of him, and he did that night helping the prophet to migrate without being noticed by the disbelievers.

The prophet was known for his trustworthiness, and most of the people kept their money saved with him. Therefore, before the prophet migrated he asked Ali to return their money to them and then follow him to Madinah, and he did as he was told and then followed the prophet to Madinah.

Ali migrated to Madinah on his feet, so his journey was really tough and he suffered greatly. When he reached Madinah, the prophet was waiting for him and prayed to Allah to send Ali Ibn Abu Talib blessings.

After the migration to Madinah, the prophet started the foundation of the Islamic country. The prophet built the mosque, made a treaty with the Jews in Madinah, and made a new society. During that time Ali was helping the prophet, following his orders, and learning from him, as he was close to him.

Ali Ibn Abu Talib was known among the believers for his bravery. He took part in most of the battles against the disbelievers. The only battle he didn’t participate in was the battle of Tabuk because the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) made him in charge of the city.

Ali led groups of worriers during the battles into the enemy lands. During the battle of Badr, he was the one who defeated the Umayyad champion Walid Ibn Utba in addition to twenty other polytheist soldiers.

During the battle of Uhud, when the bearer of the Islamic standard was killed Ali was the one who raised it up again. That’s when the disbeliever Talha Ibn Uthman challenged Ali but he Ali defeated him. When the archers left their places to go after the booty, disbelievers took advantage of that and attacked the Muslims, most of the believers ran away leaving the prophet behind. Ali and other Companions stood around the prophet to protect him.

In the battle of the Trench, Ali Ibn Abu Talib faced a leader of the disbelievers called Amr Ibn Wudd and defeated him. Additionally, In the Battle of Khaybar Ali defeated the great Jewish commander Marhab. Ali was a fearless warrior, when the Muslim army failed to conquer the Jewish fortress twice, the prophet put Ali in charge of the conquest and that’s when the Muslims managed to win. Moreover, Ali stood beside the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) in the Battle of Hunain.​

The Marriage of Ali to Fatimah

Fatima was the daughter of the prophet and Khadijah Bint Kuwailid, she was the prophet’s most beloved daughter. She was married to Ali, and the mirage was held in the Madinah after the battle of Uhud. They had four children, and their names were Al-Hasan (R.A.), Al-Husayn (R.A.), Zainab (R.A.), and Umm Kulthoom (R.A.).
Ali During Prophet Muhammad’s Era

Ali was known for being a trustworthy and reliable person, therefore the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) made him one of the scribes who write down the holy Quran that was revealed to the prophet. When Islam started to spread throughout Arabia, Ali Ibn Abu Talib helped in establishing new Islamic order, as he was the one who carried the messages and declared the new Islamic guidelines.

That’s not All; Ali was the one responsible for writing down the Treaty of Hudaybiyah (the peace treaty between the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) and Quraish). He was also sent to Yemen to teach them about Islam He was also charged with settling several disputes and putting down the uprisings of various tribes.

He was a knowledgeable person; he traveled to Syria and Ethiopia, talked to non-Arab people, and learned about their lives and customs. After the death of his father, he inherited his business. Ali was one of the men of the Banu Umayyah tribe which is a tribe that all of the Quraish respected.
Ali Ibn Abu Talib during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr

When the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) died, Abu Bakr became the first Caliph. Ali helped Abu Bakr throughout his Caliphate. Abu Bakr sent Ali with a group of Companions to protect the borders of the city during this critical time. Additionally, Abu Bakr consulted Ali before fighting apostasy and the Romans.
Ali During Caliphate of Umar ibn Al-Khattab.

When Abu Bakr died Umar ibn Al-Khattab became the second caliph. Ali helped Umar and became his trusted advisor. During the reign of Umar, the Muslim army managed to conquer the Roman Emperor in Syria, Egypt, and north Africa. That’s not all, the Islamic army also defeated the Persian Emperor in Iraq, Persia, and Khurasan, extending to the borders of Turkey and India. Umar consulted the other companions before doing anything, just like the prophet used to do.

It is said that Ali Ibn Abi Talib was the one who advised Umar to make the Hijri calendar (setting the hijra as the beginning of the Islamic calendar). Ali also advised Umar to free Jerusalem from the Romans. Umar made Ali the one in charge of the Madinah. When Umar was asked to choose the next caliph he choose Ali and Uthman.
Ali During Caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan

After Umar’s death, Uthman Ibn Affan was chosen to be the next caliph. Ali stayed in Madinah and supported Uthman. When the people started to rebel against Uthman, Ali stood by him and offered advice to him regarding how to face the provincial opposition coming from Egypt and Iraq. They wanted to displace Uthman with Ali Ibn Abi Talib, but they were rejected. However, they came back again wanting to kill Uthman and his family. Ali and his sons defended Uthman and asked Uthman to allow them to fight the rebels, but Uthman refused. Later on, Uthman was killed.​

Ali Ibn Abi Talib became the Fourth Caliph

When the third caliph, Uthman was killed the prophet’s companions chose Ali to be the fourth caliph. At first, he refused to be the fourth caliph and wanted to be a counselor. Ali and his companions decided to make the public choose, and the majority of the votes were for Ali to become the fourth caliph. Therefore, he became the next caliph On the 25th of Dhul-Hijjah 35H (24th June, 656 CE).

When he became the caliph he faced many problems. First, he had to do something about the third caliph’s assassination. Secondly, he had to establish peace and do something about the deteriorating political situation.

The destruction that happened to the political state of Madinah was caused by Abdullah ibn Saba and his illegal party, supported by slaves and village dwellers. Ali asked Abdullah ibn Saba’s followers to return to their regions and leave Madinah. However, the illegal party led by Abdullah ibn Saba refused to obey Ali and said they were just staying there to support him. While all they wanted was to cause problems and troubles among Muslims.

The reign of the fourth caliph was known as the time when many troubles happened due to Abdullah ibn Saba and his illegal party, supported by slaves and village dwellers. Abdullah ibn Saba a jew who pretended to be a Muslim during the reign of Uthman. The reason after that was to divide the Muslims and was the one who provoked people to kill Uthman, he was the one who caused all the troubles during the reign of Uthman and Ali.

During the era of Ali, Muslims didn’t conquer anyone, instead, his time was known for civil and cultural accomplishments. Ali Ibn Abi Talib was the one who constructed the court of arbitration and built jails, the police organization. In addition to moving the capital of the Caliphate from Madinah to Kufah in Iraq because it has a strategic position. This in turn made Kufah thrive and become the school of jurisprudence and established Grammar. Also, Ali was the one who ordered furnish the letters of the Holy Quran with vowel signs, so that it become easier for people to read.
Ali Ibn Abi Talib death

Ali was murdered by Ibn Muljam. When he entered the small door of the mosque, Ibn Muljam struck him. He died on the 17th of Ramadan, 40H (25th January, 661CE). his reign continued for five years.

An elder from the Quraishi reported that when Ali (R.A.) was struck by Ibn Muljam, Ali (R.A.) said:

“I have succeeded by the Lord of the Kabah.”

Before Ali dies he said to his children: “No God but Allah”. Then he died and his two sons Hasan and Hussain washed him.
Contribution of Ali ibn Abi Talib

During the reign of Uthman, he appointed his family members as governors, which caused many problems as some of them misused the powers they were given. Therefore when Ali took the reign he changed the governors and hired members of the Ansar and the rebels. Here are some of the changes Ali ibn Abi Talib had done:

Ali changed the place of the administrative center of Islam from Medina to Kufah, Iraq.
During the reign of Ali a civil war started however he managed to stop it.
During the reign of the previous three Caliphas, Ali was their advisor.
He was a judge in Yemen during the reign of the previous caliph.
He was the writer of revelation.
Ali was the one who ordered furnish the letters of the Holy Quran with vowel signs so that it becomes easier for people to read.​
