What is jihad in Islam?

Many people misunderstand or misuse the word jihad and think that Jihad in Islam means war which is completely wrong.

In this article, we will understand the meaning of Jihad in Islam, its different types, and more, let’s get started.
Jihad in Islam means.

The word Jihad in Islam means to strive to do what is good. The word Jihad doesn’t refer to war and killing people for no reason, in Islam it refers to refraining from doing anything bad and striving to become better versions of ourselves, to teach people about Islam and share our knowledge with them.

Jihad in Islam involves fighting if it’s on the defensive case if there is oppression in the practice of their religion and a threat to their life. It’s an Islamic teaching to leave the place where there’s oppression, but if the oppressor attacks, then Muslims are allowed to defend themselves.
What does the Quran say about jihad?

There are many verses in the Holy Quran about Jihad, here’re some of them:

“Permission is granted to those who are fighting because they have been oppressed…those who have been expelled from their homes without any just cause…” (Surah al-Hajj, 22:39-40)

“Fight in the way of God those who are fighting against you, and do not exceed (the limits). Verily Allah does not love those who exceed (the limits).” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:190)

“Prepare against them (i.e., the enemy) with whatever force and trained horses you can in order to frighten thereby Allah’s enemy, your enemy, and others besides them who you do not know but Allah knows them.” (Surah al-Anfal, 8:60)

“But if they (the enemies) incline to peace, then you (also) incline to it, and put your trust in Allah…” (Surah al-Anfal, 8:61)

“And what is the matter with you that you do not fight in the way of God for [the sake of] the oppressed men, women, and children who pray: ‘Our Lord, take us out of this town whose people are oppressors, and appoint for us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper…” (Surah an-Nisaa, 4:75)

“And fight in the way of God those who are fighting against you, and do not exceed the limits, surely God does not love those who exceed the limits” (2:190).

“And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out–persecution is severer than slaughter. And do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque [in Mecca] until they fight with you in it; but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers” (2:191).

“But if they desist, then surely God is Forgiving, Merciful” (2:192).

“And fight them until there is no persecution and religion should be only for God; but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors” (2:193).
What are the types of jihad in Islam?

There are three main types of Jihad in Islam jihad of the highest order, major jihad, and jihad of the lower order.
1- Jihad-e-Akbar (jihad of the highest order).

Jihad-e-Akbar in Islam refers to refraining from doing anything bad or any bad deeds. Like refraining from falling into life temptations, like lust, greed, and so on. As Muslims, we should strive to do good deeds like helping those in need, worshipping Allah, sharing our knowledge with others, fasting and reading the Quran, being nice to one another, and more.

2- Jihad-e-Kabir (major jihad).

This type of Jihad in Islam refers to spreading Allah’s message, the holy Quran, but not with force, but by wisdom, and respect for other beliefs. Allah says in the Holy Quran:

“Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and goodly exhortation…;” [16:126

“And revile not those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they, out of spite, revile Allah in their ignorance. Thus unto every people have We caused they are doing to seem fair. Then unto their Lord is their return; and He will inform them of what they used to do.” [6:109]

No one should be forced to convert to Islam, that is what the holy Quran teaches us.

“There should be no compulsion in religion. Surely, the right has become distinct from wrong; so whosoever refuses to be led by those who transgress, and believes in Allah, has surely grasped a strong handle which knows no breaking. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” [2:257]

Muslims should spread Islam by being a role model, and showing how a Muslim should be. That is what major jihad in Islam means.
3- Jihad-e-Asghar (jihad of the lower order).

Jihad-e-Asghar refers to defensive battles and it’s allowed to only a few conditions and they are:

The battle can only be defensive. Muslims are allowed to fight if someone attacks them first. Allah said in the Holy Quran:

“And fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight against you, but do not transgress. Surely Allah loves not the transgressors.” [2:191]

2- If there’s a threat to their lives and they are facing oppression, but even in this case Muslims are taught to leave the place where oppression is taking place. But if the oppressor attacks them to stop them from practicing their religion and threatens their lives then only then they are allowed to fight and defend themselves.
Hadith on jihad

Here are some of the hadiths about Jihad-e-Asghar, and we stated the conditions in which this type is allowed in the above section:

“The Prophet said, ‘The person who participates in (Holy battles) in Allah’s cause . . . and nothing compels him to do so except belief in Allah and His Apostles, will be recompensed by Allah either with a reward, or booty (if he survives) or will be admitted to Paradise (if he is killed in the battle as a martyr)’.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 1:2:35.]

Allah’s Apostle said, “Allah guarantees him who strives in His Cause and whose motivation for going out is nothing but Jihad in His Cause and belief in His Word, that He will admit him into Paradise (if martyred) or bring him back to his dwelling place, whence he has come out, with what he gains of reward and booty.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, 4:53:352.]

“He (the Messenger of Allah) did that and said: There is another act which elevates the position of a man in Paradise to a grade one hundred (higher), and the elevation between one grade and the other is equal to the height of the heaven from the earth. He (Abu Sa’id) said: What is that act? He replied: Jihad in the way of Allah! Jihad in the way of Allah!” [Sahih Muslim, 20:4645.]
