Shab-e-Barat, or the night of forgiveness, is observed every year on the night between the 14 and 15 of Shaban or the eighth month in the Islamic calendar.
How is Shab e-Barat celebrated by Muslims worldwide?

Celebrated all over South and Central Asia, including countries such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and more, Shab-e-Barat, also known as the Night of Forgiveness, is a significant observance for Muslims worldwide.

During Shab-e-Barat, devotees all over the world gather in Mosques to offer special prayers and pray for the entire night. The Holy Quran is recited until dawn, and spiritual songs are sung all through the night of Shab-e-Barat. The Muslim community members also follow the tradition of visiting their loved ones’ graves on this day to seek forgiveness for their deceased families.

Devotees are further encouraged to donate money, clothes and other goods to the poor or needy in the name of their deceased family members. In some cultures, Muslims prepare and share special food items during Shab-e-Barat, including sweet dishes, desserts, or traditional meals that are distributed among family, friends, and neighbours as a way of fostering community and spreading joy.
History and significance of Shab e-Barat

As per the Hadeeth (sayings of Prophet Muhammad), Shab-e-Barat is considered a night when Allah determines the fortunes of human beings for the year ahead. It is believed that the doors of mercy and pardon are wide open on this night, and people can approach Allah for His infinite mercy.

That is why the Shab e-Barat is a night full of blessings for all Muslims, and this night has unique characteristics that Muslims need to observe:

Tasqeem-e-umur: death and birth, happiness and sadness, victory and defeat.
Faizaan e Bakhshish: granting of forgiveness
Nazool e Rahmat: blessing
Qabool e Shifaat: acceptance of intercession
Fazeelat e Ibaadat: the greatness of worship

Have a blessed future. Shab-e-Barat Mubarak!

When is Shab-e-Barat 2025?

This year, Shab e Barat 2025 is expected to be on the night of Friday, February 13, 2025. However, the exact date is subject to the sighting of the moon of Shaban, 1446.

What is Shab-e-Barat?

Shab e Barat is an important night in the Islamic calendar and it is celebrated in the mid of Shaban (on the night in between the 14th and 15th of Shaban). This is the reason why it is called Nisf Shaban. This blessed night starts at sunset on the 14th of Shaban and ends at dawn on the 15th of Shaban.

Different countries have different ways of celebrating this day and each has a different name for it. Nisf Shaban is known as Shab e Barat or Shabe Barat in South Asia, especially in Sub-continent, Lailatul Barat in Arabic, Nisfu Syaban (Malam Nisfu Syaban) in Indonesia and Malaysia and Berat Kandili in Turkey.

Shab e Barat is a night that many Muslims revere as the night of forgiveness, praying the whole night asking Allah to bestow them with His blessings.

The Month of Shaban

Shaban is the 8th month of the Islamic Calendar. It is a month of blessings and asking Allah for forgiveness. The same is also evident from the following Hadiths about this blessed month:

Aishah bint Abu Bakr (R.A.) reported that:

"The Messenger of Allah did not fast in any month of the year more than he did in Shaban. He used to fast all of Shaban." (An-Nasai: 2180)

Our beloved Prophet (S.A.W.) used to fast all days during this month. This fact clearly shows the virtues and importance of the month of Shaban.

Shab-e-Barat according to Hadith

First of all, there are no Sahih Hadiths or verses in the Quran that clearly point out or talk about the significance of the night. However, especially in South Asia, many people celebrate the night, spending time in worship of Allah.

However, there are some Daaif Hadiths that mention the importance and virtues of this night.

Aishah (R.A.) narrated that:

".... He (S.A.W.) said: 'Indeed Allah, Mighty and Sublime is He, descends to the lowest Heavens during the night of the middle of Shaban, to grant forgiveness to more than the number of hairs on the sheep of (Banu) Kalb.'" (Tirmidhi: 739)

Another Hadith reported by Aishah (R.A.) stated that the Prophet (S.A.W.) spent the night of 14th and 15th Shaban in extensive prayer to the extent that she thought he had died. (Al-Bayhaqi & Al-Tabarani).

Shab-e-Barat according to Prominent Scholars

According to Imam Al-Shafi'ee:

"There are five nights when the supplications (Duas) are accepted by Allah. These are (1) Friday night, (2) Night before Eid-ul-Fitr, (3) Night before Eid-ul-Adha, (4) First night of Rajab and (5) Night of Nisf Shaban."

According to Imam Malik:

"There are four nights in which gates of righteousness are opened, (1) Night before Eid-ul-Fitr, (2) Night before Eid-ul-Adha, (3) Night of Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah during Hajj) and (5) Night of Nisf Shaban."

Fasting on 15th Shaban

There is no authentic Hadith that explicitly mentions the importance of fasting especially on the 15th day of Shaban. As mentioned above the Prophet (S.A.W.) used to fast frequently during this month. So 15th Shaban cannot be singled out for fasting.

Celebration of Shab-e-Barat

Different countries have different ways of celebrating this night. People often tend to distribute sweets to each other on this night. Some people even celebrate the night with fireworks although this is a result of the influence of the local traditions and does not have any religious significance and even some scholars called this Bidah (Innovation in religion). In Iraq, people often distribute sweets to children. In South Asian countries, people usually distribute a local dessert known as "Halwa" or other delicacies to neighbors, family, friends, and the poor and needy. Middle Eastern countries normally do not celebrate the night.

Conclusion

So, you may spend this night by doing good deeds such as making Duas for yourself and for all the Muslims around the world, reciting Al-Quran and any other act to get Allah's attention and blessings as these deeds are Sunnah of Prophet (S.A.W.) according to the Hadiths mentioned above. But note one thing that any act of worship during this night is not obligatory.

What is Shab-e-Barat?

Shab-e-Barat is the night before the 15th of Shaban, when Allah (SWT), according to Muslim belief, descends to the lowest heaven, forgives all repentants, and asks Him to forgive them.

Shab-e-Barat signifies the cleansing of one’s soul through repentance and seeking God’s help for a better future. During this night, most believers indulge in individual acts of devotion which, at times, assume the form of performing extra prayers, recitation of the Quran, and various supplications known as duas.

The month of Shaban holds great importance for several reasons, primarily for being a month in which Muslims globally spiritually prepare themselves for the sacred upcoming month of Ramadan.

It is also believed that on the 15th of Shaban, which is Shab-e-Barat, Allah (SWT) grants forgiveness for all previous sins to those who repent. Thus, many Muslims hold this month in high regard and are exhorted to increase their acts of heartfelt worship on the night of forgiveness.

This night is embedded deeply in the Muslim faith. It highlights the merciful character of Allah (SWT) who always awaits the repentance of his followers and will guide them on the straight path.

Although Shab-e-Barat being mentioned in the Quran directly is a topic of debate amongst various scholars, its importance is implied from several Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, PBUH) and the customs of early Muslims.

“Is there no one who will ask Me for forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there no one who will ask Me for provision so that I may provide for him? Is there no one who is afflicted by trouble, that I may relieve him?’ And so on, until dawn comes.”

[Ibn Majah]

15th of Shaban: What Does it Mean?

It is the mid-point of the Islamic month and is considered a prelude to the holy month of Ramadan. In Shaban, one holds spiritual preparation where Muslims try to go up spiritually and find closeness with Allah before the fasting month starts.

One of the very important dates in the Islamic calendar is the 15th of Shaban because it marks the night when a person’s destiny for the next year is determined.

According to all the Islamic traditions, on this night, people’s deeds will be presented before Allah. and their fates will be decided for the next year including the issues of life, death, happiness, etc.

The 15th Shaban is a time when a person reflects on all the actions taken during the last year and, meanwhile, asks for mercy and kindness from Allah (SWT).
