The Importance of Dua in the Marketplace

Dua, or supplication, is an essential aspect of the Islamic faith. It is a means of communicating with Allah, seeking His guidance and blessings, and expressing gratitude. In the context of the marketplace, making dua before engaging in trade or business is of particular significance. It is a practice that is deeply rooted in the Sunnah, the teachings and practices of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and it serves as a means of seeking Allah’s assistance and blessings in our commercial endeavors.

The marketplace, or souk, has always been a bustling hub of economic activity in Islamic societies. It is a place where merchants and traders come together to buy and sell goods, negotiate deals, and conduct transactions. In such a competitive and fast-paced environment, it is easy to become consumed by the pursuit of material wealth and lose sight of the spiritual dimension of our actions. This is where the practice of making dua becomes crucial, as it serves as a powerful reminder of our dependence on Allah and the need to seek His blessings in our financial dealings.

In the Quran, Allah says: “Call upon Me; I will respond to you” (Surah Ghafir, 40:60). This verse emphasizes the importance of dua and highlights the promise of Allah to respond to the supplications of His servants. The act of making dua is an expression of humility, trust, and reliance on Allah. It is a way of acknowledging that we are limited in our abilities and that ultimately, success and prosperity come from Allah alone.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized the significance of dua in the marketplace. He encouraged believers to seek Allah’s blessings in their commercial transactions and to ask for His guidance and assistance. In a hadith narrated by Abu Huraira, the Prophet said: “When the Imam says: ‘Amin’, you also say ‘Amin’, for the angels say ‘Amin’ at that time, and he who says ‘Amin’ will have his past sins forgiven” (Sahih Bukhari). This hadith underscores the importance of making dua collectively and seeking the blessings of Allah in all aspects of our lives, including our business transactions.

One of the specific dua for the marketplace that is recommended in the Sunnah is as follows:

Transliteration:

Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, yuhyee wa yumeetu, wa Huwa hayyun laa yamootu, biyadihil-khayru, wa Huwa alaa kulli shayin Qadeer.

Translation:

“There is no Lord except Allah. He is One and has no partners. His is the Kingdom and for Him are all praises. He gives life and gives death. He is eternal and everlasting In His control is goodness, and He has power over everything.”

This dua is a powerful supplication that encapsulates the essence of seeking Allah’s blessings and guidance in our financial affairs. It acknowledges the importance of conducting business in a lawful and ethical manner, while also recognizing that true wealth and prosperity come from Allah’s grace.

Making dua in the marketplace is a profound spiritual practice that is deeply rooted in the Sunnah and the teachings of Islam. It serves as a means of seeking Allah’s blessings and guidance in our commercial endeavors, and it reminds us of the importance of conducting business with integrity and ethical conduct. Additionally, it is important to note that giving charity with a sincere intention can also help in granting our dua.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Charity does not decrease wealth” (Sahih Muslim). Therefore, combining the act of making dua with the practice of giving charity can lead to success and prosperity in both our worldly and spiritual pursuits. May Allah bless us all with His guidance and grace in our commercial transactions and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.

Why are Markets the Worst places On the earth?

ٰSalim bin Abdillah (May Allah be pleased with him) said :

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: ” أَحَبُّ البِلَادِ إِلَى اللَّهِ، مَسَاجِدُهَا، وَأَبْغَضُ البِلَادِ إِلَى اللَّهِ، أَسْوَاقُهَا ” (صحيح مسلم)

The Messenger of Allah –peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said, “The most beloved places to Allah are the mosques, and the ones he dislikes the most are the markets.” (Muslim)

Imam Nawawy said, regarding the saying of the Prophet –peace and prayer of Allah be upon him-, “The place that Allah hates the most is the markets.” Because the market is the place where fraud, lie, usury, false vow, breaking of promise, abandoning of zikrullah, and other evil doings, happened.

The market is a place that causes negligence. Women tend to expose their beauty there. The market is also a place of free mixing among men and women and a place of roaring noise and abysmal talks. Allah the Glorified and Exalted detests the market, so a believer should also detest it since he dislikes what his Lord dislikes.

We should avoid going the market, not linger there for enjoyment, and only enter when we have genuine needs and necessities.
If markets are considered worst places, Should We Avoid Establishing Shops In Markets or engaging in business?

When you read the hadith mentioned abouve that markets are the worst places, it’s natural to have this question. One more question arises which is the mention of prophets going to markets in certain Quranic verses. That the prophets used to go to markets and trade.

The answer is that, the hadith, inwhich the market has been described as the worst places. This hadith does not prove the prohibition of going to the market, because it is proven by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to go to the market and to pray in the mosque of the market.

So going to the market eating and drinking in the market, or opening a shop, and doing business is not prohibited. But in the context of today’s situation, it is very important to keep a few things in mind regarding the market:

(1) One should not go to the market unnecessarily.

(2) Just as it is forbidden for a woman to travel unnecessarily and without a non-mahram, the same method should be observed for the market.

(3) At present, there are major Shariah-related scandals in the bazaar and street hotels, so while eating in these hotels, avoid Shariah objections, such as dancing, fornication, gambling, alcohol, and eating and drinking in hotels that sell prohibited items.
