Dua For Sickness

Dua and Zikir Dua For Sickness

Dua For illness - Dua For Sickness - Dua For Fever - Dua For Shifa

The condition of our health is a test from Allah. As believers, we believe in taqdir and destiny. We believe that all good and bad is from Allah. It is wajib (obligatory) to be happy with taqdir as that is the will of Allah. Almighty Allah is Al-Hakim (the All-Wise). Every act of Allah has wisdom in it. Our present health situation is decreed by Allah. There is some good hidden in this situation which we cannot comprehend. What we should do is to Submit to the will of Allah and make du‘a to Allah to grant us cure. If we believe that sickness is from Allah, then we also believe that cure is also from Allah. We should turn to Allah with full conviction and be positive.

The Prophet s.a.w. taught us to take care of our health and well-being. Despite putting in our best efforts to live healthily and avoid illnesses, we may fall sick at times for several reasons, including the weather, allergies and many more.

It is tough being ill but Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. has reassured us that Allah will expiate some of the sins of a sick person. Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah r.a. reported that the Prophet s.a.w. said:

"No tiredness, exhaustion, worry, grief, distress or harm befalls a believer in this world, not even a thorn that pricks him, but Allah expiates some of his sins thereby."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

Prevention is better than cure. However, when we do fall sick, we need to find the best cure. The Prophet s.a.w. said:

"Allah has sent down the disease and the cure and has made for every disease the cure."

(Sunan Abi Daud)

On top of seeking medical treatment, we need to seek help from Him, for indeed He is The One who can cure illnesses and save us from any harm.

Many of us turn to medicine and doctors when we get sick. However, the first thing we need to do in times of illness is turn to the One Who Created us. Allah SWT is Ash-Shaafee - The One who cures, the Healer. He is the only one who can cure and heal us from a disease or ailment. His healing is perfect according to His Wisdom as He is the source from which all cures are derived.

The Prophet PBUH said:

“Allah has sent down the disease and the cure, and has made for every disease the cure.” - Abu Dawood

He also said:

“Treat sickness, for Allah has not created any disease except He has also created the cure, except for one disease… Old age.” - At-Tirmidhi

These are the duas I say when my family or I are sick, in pain, or in need of any medical or dental procedure. It has become part of our lives and the first thing I turn to before taking medicine or visiting a doctor. Aisha R.A. informed us:

“When Prophet Muhammedﷺ was in final illness, he used to recite Surat An-Nas and Surat Al- Falaq, and then blow his breath over his body. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite those two suras and blow my breath over him and make him rub his body with his own hand for its blessings." (al-Bukhari)

It is also related that when someone fell ill, the Prophet ﷺ would recite one of these first four duas for them.

Dua For Diseases

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-barasi, wal-jununi, wal-judhami, wa min sayyi'il-asqaam (Sunan Ibn Dawood 1556)

O Allah! Indeed I seek refuge in You from leucoderma, and madness, and leprosy, and all bad diseases.

A Sincere Prayer for the Recovery of a Sick Person

In Islam, the act of making dua, or supplication, holds significant importance. Dua is a means through which a believer can directly communicate with Allah, seeking His guidance, help, and blessings. It is a powerful tool that demonstrates a person’s reliance and trust in Allah’s mercy and benevolence. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of dua and encouraged believers to make supplications regularly. He said, “Nothing can change the qadr (divine decree) except dua” (Sunan Ibn Majah).

One of the most common topics for which Muslims seek divine assistance by making dua is health. Health is a precious gift from Allah, and it is essential for leading a fulfilling and productive life.

The Quran and the Sunnah contain numerous prayers and supplications related to maintaining good health and seeking recovery from illness. These supplications are not only a means to seek physical healing but also serve as a source of spiritual comfort and strength during times of illness and adversity. One such dua is as follows;

Transliteration:
Allahumma Rabban-naas adhhibil-ba’sa washfi Antash-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uk shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqamaa.

Translation:

“O Allah, the Lord of mankind, remove the difficulty and bring about healing as You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that will leave no ailment.”

The act of making dua for health is deeply rooted in the Islamic tradition and holds immense significance for believers. It serves as a means of seeking Allah’s protection, guidance, and blessings, while also fostering a sense of reliance and trust in His mercy. The Qur’an and the Sunnah provide numerous supplications and prayers specifically tailored for maintaining good health and seeking recovery from illness. By incorporating these duas into their daily practice, Muslims can strengthen their connection with Allah and seek His assistance in matters of health and well-being.

Furthermore, it is important to note that the efficacy of dua is greatly enhanced when coupled with sincere acts of charity and goodwill. As mentioned in a hadith, “The prayer of a person for another is not rejected as long as he prays for his brother with something good in his absence” (Sahih Muslim). Therefore, by giving charity with a sincere intention and seeking the well-being of others, a believer can increase the likelihood of their own prayers being answered by Allah.

Making dua for health is an integral part of Islamic worship and serves as a means of seeking Allah’s blessings and protection. By adhering to the teachings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah and incorporating specific supplications and prayers for good health into their daily routine, believers can cultivate a strong connection with Allah and seek His assistance in matters of health and well-being. Additionally, the act of giving charity with a sincere intention can further enhance the efficacy of one’s dua, as it demonstrates selflessness and compassion towards others.
May Allah grant us all good health, both physically and spiritually, and accept our prayers and supplications. Ameen.

1) Dua for the sick

Of course, when we are ill, we should seek medical attention - but we can also pray to Allah s.w.t. to help with our recovery.

It is narrated that Aisha r.a. said that when anyone among them had an illness, the Prophet s.a.w. used to rub the area of the pain and recite the following dua for protection:

اللَّهُمَّ ربَّ النَّاسِ ، أَذْهِب الْبَأسَ ، واشْفِ ، أَنْتَ الشَّافي لا شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ ، شِفاءً لا يُغَادِرُ سقَماً

Allahumma Rabban-naas, azhibil-ba’s, washfi antash-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illaa shifaa’uka, shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqamaa

O Allah, Lord of mankind, do away with my suffering. Heal (me) as You are the only Healer and there is no cure except that of Yours, it is that which leaves no ailment behind

(Al-Bukhari)

2) Dua for sickness

Uthman Ibn Abi Al-’As r.a. reported: I complained to the Messenger of Allah s.a.w. about a pain I had in my body. The Messenger of Allah s.a.w. said,

"Place your hand where you feel pain and say: 'Bismillah (In the Name of Allah)' three times; and then repeat seven times: 'A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa 'uhadhiru (I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that afflicts me and that which I apprehend)."

(Sahih Muslim)

As we put our hand on the area of pain with the intention to find relief, recite the following:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ x3

Bismillah

In the Name of Allah

'A'udhu bi'izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa 'uhadhiru

I seek refuge with Allah and with His Power from the evil that afflicts me and that which I apprehend.

3) Dua for a sick person

Prophet Ayyub a.s was blessed with abundant wealth, land and children. He was then tested by having all of those, including his health, taken away from him. All his limbs were not free from disease except for his tongue and heart which he used to remember Allah s.w.t.

People cut ties with him due to his illness and he was expelled from the city with only his wife who was there to support him. Prophet Ayyub a.s remained patient and grateful despite his situation. He sought help from Allah s.w.t by reciting the dua in Surah Al-Anbiyaa’ (21:83). The following Dua is an excerpt from the verse:

رَبِّي أَنِّي مَسَّنِيَ الضُّرُّ وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Robbi annee massaniyad-durru wa-anta arhamur-raahimeen

My Lord. Indeed, adversity has touched me, and you are the Most Merciful of the merciful.

4) Dua for very sick person

When we see our sick child, mother and loved ones, it's normal to feel helpless and sad. However, do try to remember that Allah is Ash-Shaafee (The One who cures, The Healer).

Aisyah r.a. reported that: Whenever Allah's Messenger s.a.w. became sick, he would recite the Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An- Nas) and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I (Aisyah r.a.) used to recite (these two Surahs) and rub his hands over his body hoping for its blessings.

Qul a'uuzu birobbil-falaq

Min sharri ma kholaq

Wa min sharri ghosiqin izaa waqob

Wa min sharrin-naffaathaati fil-’uqod

Wa min sharri haasidin izaa hasad

Say: I take refuge with the Lord of the dawn,

From the evil of what He has created,

And from the evil of the dark night when it comes,

And from the evil of those who blow on knots (practice Secret Arts),

And from the evil of the envious (one) when he envies.

Qul a'uuzu birobbin-naas

Malikin-naas

Ilaahin-naas

Min sharril-waswaasil khonnaas

Allazii yuwaswisu fii suduurin-naas

Minal-jinnati wan-naas

Say: I take refuge with the Lord of people,

the King of people,

the God of people,

from the evil of the slinking whisperer

who whispers in the chests of people

both jinn and people

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

5) Dua for mercy, forgiveness and healing of pain

content_7.png

In a hadith, Rasulullah s.a.w. said: “Whoever among you suffers some sickness, or his brother suffers some sickness, let him say:

Oh our Lord Allah Who is in Heaven, Holy be Your name, Your will is done in heaven and on earth; as Your mercy is in heaven, bestow it upon the earth. Forgive us of our sins and our wrong ways. You are the Lord of the good. Send down mercy from You and remedy from You to heal upon this pain, so that it is healed up”

Robbana-Allahullazi fis-samaai taqoddasas-muka amruka fis-samaai wal-ardhi kamaa rohmatuka fis-samaai faj-al rohmataka fil-ardhi. Ighfir lanaa huubanaa wa khotoyaanaa anta robbut-toyyibeen. Anzil rohmatan min rohmatika wa shifaan min shifaaika ‘alaa haazal-waja’i fa-yabra’u

(Sunan Abi Daud)

6) Dua when visiting the sick

content_8.png

During the Covid-19 period, we were not encouraged to come into close contact with those who are ill as there is a possibility of carrying the virus and spreading it to other people. However, we may still recite this prayer from a safe distance.

The Prophet s.a.w. said:

"He who visits a sick person who is not on the point of death and supplicates seven times:

As'alullahal-'Azima Rabbal-'Arshil-'Azimi, an yashfiyaka

(I beseech Allah the Great, the Rubb of the Great Throne, to heal you),

Allah will certainly heal him from that sickness."
