You are probably familiar with the phrase Ameen which is recited at the end of a dua or supplication to punctuate a prayer or message.

The meaning of Ameen comes from root A-M-N in both Hebrew and Arabic, meaning truthful or faithful. By saying Ameen you are affirming what has been said, in English this would take form of “verily,” “truly,” or “May it be so.”

The word Allahumma is just Allah’s name, this is best translated as “O, Allah” or “Ya Allah”.

Together, Allahumma Ameen would be a plea, “O Allah, hear this truth” or hear my prayer, my invocation.

Allahumma Ameen in Arabic:

In Arabic Allahumma Ameen is written:

اللَّهُمَّ امين

This phrase is similar to a common Arabic saying, Ameen Ya Rabbul Alameen:

آمين يا رب العالمين

The rough translation of this is “answer me O Lord of the Universe”

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said

“Say Ameen (Amin)” when the Imam says it and if the Amin of any one of you coincides with that of the angels then all his past sins will be forgiven.” Ibn Shihab said, “Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to Say “Amin.”

Reference: Sahih Al-Bukhari 780
In-book reference : Book 10, Hadith 175
