The beautiful adhan, a call for all Muslims to come together and join in prayer. We here this exactly 5 times every day or 1825 times a year. But how many of us know the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad on what he say in supplication after hearing the adhan?

According to Hadith from Al Bukhari we find the dua after hearing adhan:

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:Allah’s Messenger (pubh) said,

Dua For After Adhan

“Whoever after listening to the Adhan says,
‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa’imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu’

English Translation: O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection”. Reference : Sahih Al-Bukhari 614

Hadith On Proper Etiquette While Listening to Adhan

Be Considerate

It’s important to be respectful of others. Don’t be a distraction and be present in the moment. We can get distracted from phones and friends, just turn both of them on silent. There are some who believe that talking during adhan is a sin but there is no authentic hadith to back this claim. It comes down common sense, visiting the masjid is a spiritual process and being noisy is never attractive.

Repeat After the Muezzin

When listening to azan the best thing to do is to just repeat after the muezzin.

Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said, “Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu’adh-dhin is saying. Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 612 In-book reference : Book 10, Hadith 10

“Some of my companions told me that Hisham had said, “When the Mu’adh-dhin said, “Haiyi `alassala (come for the prayer).” Muawiya said, “La hawla wala quwata illa billah (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah)” and added, “We heard your Prophet saying the same.” Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 613 In-book reference : Book 10, Hadith 11

“When you hear the Mu’adhin calling for the prayer, repeat his words then ask Allah’s blessings upon me, because the one who asks Allah’s blessings upon me once will be rewarded ten blessings by Allah.”
